The Heart of Newhaven is an intergenerational community hub based in an old Victorian primary school, originally opened in 1864 to serve the fishing community in Newhaven. The focus of the HoNC hub is on bringing people together to reduce social isolation. The Heart of Newhaven is also a home to various artisans, as well as a small museum about the Newhaven fishing community that was established in the early 16thC, a collection of art and photographs and a restored Victorian Schoolroom.
From May 2025 we will be offering tours of the Heart building and schoolyard to showcase the history of the school and the area around it, sharing stories of our very own skeleton recently found buried in sand below the schoolyard and the ghost said to haunt one of our school stairwells. Guided tours will be offered on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 11.00am, with self-guided tours available on other days. Tours are free but donations towards the work of the community hub will be gratefully received.
